"Oprah" Inspires Young Humane Hero

Humane Hero Jacob Crespo receives his award from AHS Staff Member Alexis Boyle.

Inspired by an episode of "Oprah," our latest Edna Hoffman Evans Humane Hero, Jacob Crespo, decided to celebrate his birthday by helping animals. In his birthday party invitation, the 7-year-old asked his friends to bring gifts for our shelter animals instead of toys and other presents for himself. "I thought of doing this because the dogs (at the shelter) don't get birthdays or toys," he said. So inspiring was Jacob's request that even his neighbors pitched in! The result? Enough dog and cat food, toys and treats to feed and entertain dozens of animals! Jacob's kindness doesn't stop here; he plans on doing this type of charitable work for his next three birthdays. Next year, his party will benefit Phoenix Children's Hospital.

"If every kid gave up just one birthday," said Jacob, "the world would be a better place." We agree, Jacob! And so do the animals who are enjoying the wonderful presents you gave them!
